Creating an App Password for Outlook and other Clients

Modified on Tue, 12 Oct, 2021 at 2:55 PM

This guide is designed for users having issues with outlook or other clients after Multi-factor authentication has been enabled. Typically users will be requested to input their password repeatedly into Microsoft Apps.

This affects only a small portion of users and it’s because of settings unique to your client/computer.

The easiest fix for this is simply to inject a unique “app password” into the client that is prompting for a password repeatedly.

To do this:

  1. Sign into your office 365 portal by visiting https://portal.office.com

  1. Once logged in please click the following link or copy and paste it into a new tab

You will be greeted with the following screen. Click on Create:

Now, name your app password to reflect your client/device (For Example Desktop-Outlook)

Copy the unique password created for your client and paste it where the app is asking for the password:

Your Outlook (or other client) will work normally now.
