Step-by-Step IT Equipment Moving Instructions
1. Desktop vs. Laptop Setup
If you have a desktop or laptop, here are the differences in your setup:
• Desktop Setup: Includes a monitor, keyboard, mouse, webcam, and the desktop itself.
• Laptop Setup: A laptop might come with a docking station and other accessories like a monitor and external keyboard.
2. Understanding the Equipment
• Keyboard & Mouse: Used for input and navigating your computer.
• Webcam: Used for video calls. Don’t worry, it’s not always watching you!
• Monitor: Displays what’s on your computer. If you have multiple monitors, each will need to be unplugged.
• Desktop: The main body of your computer—please handle with care!
• Docking Station (for Laptop users): Helps connect your laptop to external monitors and other devices.
3. Disconnecting Your Equipment
• Desktop Setup:
1. Monitor: Unplug the cables, look for the display port cable (press the tab to release it). Some monitors also have cables with “screwy knobs” that need to be unscrewed.
2. Power Supply: Unplug the power cable from your monitor and desktop.
3. Webcam: Unplug the webcam from your computer.
• Laptop Setup with Docking Station:
1. Dock Connector: Unplug the dock connector from your laptop and close the laptop lid.
2. Docking Station: Disconnect all cables, including power and monitor connections (press tabs if needed).
4. Packing Your Equipment
• Packing Boxes: Use the box provided by Troy Buchanan.
1. Bubble Wrap: Line the box with bubble wrap to protect your equipment.
2. Pack the Components: Carefully place each component in the box, ensuring that cables are packed neatly to avoid tangling.
3. Label the Box: Write your name and room number clearly on the top of the box.
5. Special Instructions
• Laptop: Wrap your laptop in two layers of bubble wrap for extra protection before placing it in the same box.
• Monitor: Wrap your monitor with two layers of bubble wrap and label it with your name and room number - This may be transported separately.
6. Final Steps
• Seal the Box: Once everything is packed, tape up the box securely.
• Label Again: Double-check that your name and room number are clearly visible.
Reminder: If you don’t know your room number or need help, please contact Troy Buchanan at [email protected]
