1Password Setup Guide

Modified on Fri, 1 Dec, 2023 at 9:59 AM

The 1Password browser extension is the easiest way to save, fill, and change passwords for websites and applications that you need access to. You can use it to sign into websites and apps, view items, and even access shared vaults between departments. You can move your existing information from other password managers into 1Password, including password managers built into popular browsers. 1Password is available on all your devices, so you will always have all your information handy. Any changes you make on one device are immediately available everywhere else.

Below are the steps to setup 1Password in your browser:

Step 1: Check your email for the activation link. Email comes from 1Password (no-reply@password.com), it should be a request from Matt or Andrew.

Step 5: When you click 'next', it takes you to the page to set up your account password. Create a password with a minimum of 10 characters. Please note that depending on what browser you use there might be a popup asking to save this password. For example, in Chrome, the built-in password manager may pop up and ask you if you'd like to save this password. Please choose NO as we will be disabling the built in browser password manager after 1Password is configured.

Step 6: Once you create your password and click next, the page to generate a unique secret key will pop up. NEVER share your unique secret key with anyone else.

Step 7: Once you generate the secret key, make sure to download the PDF as the pdf has the entire secret key which you will need for any future device setups.

Step 8: When you open the PDF, the entire secret key is shown. That secret key is used to add devices to your 1Password account.

Step 9: Save the PDF in a secure place (OneDrive), where it can just be accessible by you so that no one has access to your secret key.

Step 10: Once you save the pdf and press next, the page pops up to add the 1Password plugin to your browser. The application is smart enough to recognize which browser you are using and direct you to the correct extension to install. If you need to install it in other browsers, there is a link at the end of this article for all extensions for different browsers to install. In this example we are using Chrome but the steps should apply to all browsers. Click on Get 1Password for Chrome (or Edge, Firefox, etc).
